Is It Time To Join The 'preppers'? How To Survive The Climate-ch

In the winter, food may well be scarce and water more abundant; in the summer, the reverse, so you may want to prepare an option for each season. You also need to consider how you'll get there. One location may be perfect, but if you're relying on petrol and roads, in the SHTF scenario it may be inaccessible. Give yourself at least one location you can walk to. As practice for keeping themselves hidden, or just for the buzz, some people engage in an activity called "stealth camping" . Essentially this means sneaking into places they are not allowed to be, staying the night and leaving again without ever being detected. If you've bought your own bunker, obviously you don't need to bother with this. Just make sure the hatch is strong, and that you can get there. Could I disembowel a rabbit? Getting the equipment and supplies isone thing, but being ready to use them is another.
Full text obtainable at this website: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/feb/17/time-to-join-preppers-survive-climate-change-apocalypse

A wallet containing his drivers license, credit cards, cash, and medical insurance cards. His car keys. An extra pair of eye glasses. A pen and small pad of paper. With these items, a preppers family has more options. Examples of these options include: Calling the fire department. Calling a friend, family member, or cab for transportation, if the family car was parked in the garage and was destroyed by the fire. Using the medical insurance cards to quickly check an injured family member into a hospital. Paying, with cash or credit cards, for motel expenses and for grocery and clothing store expenses. Using the Swiss Army knife for tasks such as the opening of bottles and cans.
This information is based on: http://www.examiner.com/article/why-make-a-bug-out-bag-as-small-as-possible

How to Make a Bug Out Bag, a 72-hour Survival Kit

The main bug out bag purpose of this kit is to allow you quick evacuation and short term survival. A well-stocked kit should include the following items: Non-perishable food to last for at least 72 hours. Food items could include energy bars, canned items and military rations. 72 hours worth of water and water purification tablets. According to the U.S. Army Survival Manual, you need a minimum of two liters of water daily to maintain efficiency. Candles, waterproof matches, fire starting kit and a lighter AM/FM battery or hand-crank operated radio and a cell phone with extra batteries First Aid kit Battery or hand-crank operated flashlight and glow sticks Spoons, knives, forks and a can opener Folding and fixed blade knife Insect spray, moist towelettes, and hand sanitizer Sleeping bag, emergency blankets, spare shoe strings and para cord Medical records and any medications Maps and emergency literature Weapons: hand gun, pellet gun, sling shot and small game hunting supplies Rain poncho, toe and hand warmers Extra socks, underwear and clothes Spare plastic bags Inexpensive folding tent. This list isnt all-inclusive, and you may need to add supplies that are relevant to your situation. The easiest way to create your own bug out bag is to write down a checklist of items needed. Start with the most critical items such as water and work your way down through less vital items. Remember not to forget the small things. Survival Contingency Plans In the event your emergency kit is unavailable, its a good idea to have a secondary bug out bag available in another location.
You will get the full content over at: https://suite101.com/a/how-to-make-a-bug-out-bag-a360392

Zombie bug-out bag

8 of 8 next Zombie SAK with axe Everybody needs a bug-out bag for the next big disaster, whether it's a hurricane or a zombie apocalypse. A company in Somerville, Mass., called Zombie SAK, which stands for Survival Assistance Kit, sells a variety of go-bags tailored for surviving the undead anarchy, containing multi-purpose tools, water bottles, medical kits and hatchets. "It actually started as an idea as a wedding gift for my sister and her husband, because they both really like zombie stuff," said founder Ben Lewis. Deluxe kits also feature extra zombie-chopping options like machetes and Gurkha-style kukri knives, but Lewis advised against wielding them "until the government tells us that there actually are zombies." Survival Gear: Ultimate Survival Kit

Fire - I go with BIC, cotton balls and a small bottle of hand sanitizer. As a back up I bring along yellow & paper birch bark. I tested both. Have to say I even soaked the bark in water and in a second it still took a flame. A space blanket, a small tarp and a fire in a pinch will get me through most nights. John Jan 30, 2014 Great article - short and sweet. Although I'd add a tube tent like the ones in the packs at http://www.gosurvivebags.com in case you get stuck overnight. Not just for protection from rain and snow, but it keep the heat in if you pitch near a fire. Just my two cents. Ryan Zombie Oct 27, 2013 Prepping for any emergency is important. List of Cold Weather Survival Gear

One of the passengers a city dweller from Chicago wondered aloud, as we neared my rural residence: Arent you afraid living out here . Apparently, the lack of street lights, convenience stores, or basic amenities of city life struck him as being rather threatening. Even though only a few miles away are fast-food joints and gas stations on every corner, there is still a level of self-sufficiency required to live the country life. Although its comforting to have good neighbors, country folks dont typically rely on help from others. Rather, they prepare for power outages, floods, blizzards and other natural calamities so that they can ride it out. However, what some people fail to realize is how winter weather events can have a way of bringing preparedness, or a lack thereof, to reality when traveling. I recall in the late 70s, when I-75 was abruptly closed near the Ohio border by deep snow and thousands of motorists were stranded for days in their vehicles. The National Guard came to the rescue, but not before motorists were forced to fend for themselves. With this in mind, I solicited advice from outdoor enthusiasts from across North America and heres a list of items you may wish to consider to take along on your next outdoor excursion. Depending on your level of adventure, some of the gear may be unnecessary for your needs, but its better to have it and not need it, than to not have it and need it.
Referrals for this subject material: http://www.ammoland.com/2014/01/new-years-resolution-more-survival-gear/

Survival Gear Review: Ultimate Survival Technnologies SaberCut

The motor-free, noise-free, hand pulled SaberCut has 24 inches of bi-directional cutting teeth and generous nylon webbing straps on either end. The straps are soft enough to be gripped comfortably bare-handed, and the loops are large enough to accommodate gloved handsa valid concern for use in cold weather. The whole kit is featherweight, with the saw and its carrying pouch weighing only 6.6 ounces. So, how does it cut? Like a champ. Admittedly, I was pulling too hard on the first cuts, so it bound up on the ash log I was sawing. But as soon as I tried an easier touch, it cut quickly and deeply. The cuts in the logs look just like those of a gas-powered chainsaw, they just take a little longer to materialize. The self-cleaning teeth stayed remarkably sharp, cut after cut. But if you do manage to wear them down, the teeth can be sharpened with standard -inch chainsaw chain file. Theres actually a little bit of spare room in the carrying pouch, so Im planning to cut down a file to add to the kit.
This data is based upon: http://www.outdoorlife.com/blogs/survivalist/2013/06/survival-gear-review-ultimate-survival-technnologies-sabercut

A foam mat gets your body off the cold ground or snow and prevents heat loss while you sleep. Keep your sleeping bag dry when not in use by packing it in a watertight bag or rolling it as tightly as possible. Do not wear wet clothing in the sleeping bag, and keep your head outside the bag so your breath does not condense near your body. Food Cold weather survival requires a high-calorie intake to maintain adequate body heat. Foods high in carbohydrates with sufficient protein, combined with enough physical activity to keep your metabolism up, are crucial to making it through cold weather. Trail mixes and granola bars generally have a balanced mix of carbohydrates and protein, but avoid overly sugary foods unless they're needed to stimulate blood flow during treatment of hypothermia. Also avoid food or beverages that can dehydrate you, like meat, chocolate, coffee and alcohol. Drink at least two quarts of water every day. We're more than OK with the reindeer sweaters and polka-dot ties we got this Christmas, but here's one gift we wish we would have found under the Christmas tree. Bear Grylls, the glamorous poster boy of the reality TV survival genre (who once consumed his own urine from a canteen on camera), is back. And just like the premises of his former hit show Man vs. Wildlike, say, teaching viewers to tunnel through ice caves with reindeer antlers as a makeshift ice-axits slightly over the top. Six Tech Products We Can't Stop Talking About>>> This December, Grylls, in partnership with Gerber, debuted the $1,000 Bear Grylls Ultimate Pack, which comes jammed with 30 gadgets and at least fourteen different knives (by our eyeball accounting). It also has two machetes, a hatchet, and one curved, gnarly-looking thing that looks ideal for either a plane-crash survivor scenario or the next film in the Saw series. Of course, all of this comes conveniently stored in your Bearpack, Grylls trademark commando 60 knapsack, which is emblazoned with the initials BG and is equipped with reflectors to alert you to oncoming traffic wherever it is you might be encountering oncoming traffic. Not everything in there is a sharp object. Theres a flashlight.
Access the reference information on this page: http://www.mensfitness.com/leisure/outdoor/gerber-debuts-bear-grylls-entire-ultimate-survival-pack

Mitre 10 Mega Palmerston North was told to take its civil defence kits off the shelves yesterday because the first aid bags in the kit had Red Cross branding but were not Red Cross-official. After one woman bought all the emergency blankets in store and certain brands of water containers and gas cookers sold out, the Featherston St store was eventually given the word to keep selling the kits. "It was a communication mix-up," a Mitre 10 head office spokeswoman said. "They got the message about the branding and took them off the shelves, but they're allowed to keep selling them until the end of the month until we get a new brand in to replace them." In spite of the confusion, Mitre 10 Mega was doing a roaring trade for civil defence-related items yesterday. Shop assistant Lana Eder said yesterday's rush for emergency items was one of the biggest she had seen in 19 years. While the days after the Christchurch earthquake were busier, this earthquake had a more personal impact for Manawatu residents, she said. "With Christchurch, people were buying up things like portaloos and sending them down or taking them down there for people. "But this one, we felt it, and it has got people actually thinking about themselves." The elderly and those with young children were the first through the door and despite civil defence campaigns many didn't have a clue where to start, she said. "We will have to frantically order a few more things in to cover supplies. Water containers have been popular, gas cookers, and the emergency blankets, a lady came in and bought all of them." Red Cross Manawatu-Whanganui manager Adie Transom said now was a good time to be thinking about things like first-aid kits. Any kit was better than nothing. Ms Transom's staff in Palmerston North are ready to shift down to Wellington if their capital offices continue to be affected by aftershocks.
Source for this material: http://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-standard/news/8952582/Survival-packs-held-back

What's in Resistance 3's Survival Pack?

What's in Resistance 3's Survival Pack? Posted October 11th, 2011 at 10:02 EDT by Daniel Williamson Insomniac Games has revealed more information regarding the first DLC add-on for Resistance 3, the Survival Pack, which is set to launch this week on the PlayStation Store. The Survival Pack includes a brand new multiplayer mode, titled Invasion - a team-based mode that pits two opposing teams to simultaneously control multiple control nodes across the map. The longer a team keeps hold of the nodes, the more the points tally up. However, this new multiplayer mode is not the only thing that you will get your hands on in the Survival Pack. The DLC also includes four brand new skins based on various characters from Resistance 3s main campaign, as well as a XMB theme. The Survival Pack will be available this week worldwide.
For the entire original edition which includes any existing additional photos or videos, check out: http://www.psu.com/a013236/Whats-in-Resistance-3s-Survival-Pack?page=0

Win Festival survival pack courtesy of World War Z

The Survival Pack is available for download right now on the Xbox Live Marketplace for Xbox 360 players and Steam for the PC version. In March, we were among the very first outside of Valve to see the Survival Pack in development. (You can read our report for an introduction to the DLC.) While at Valve, we had a chance to play with the designers themselves, and while that was educational, it was also a bit unusual; it's not every day you get to play with the ultimate insiders. They developers know every trick in the book, and have plenty of experience working playing the game. Of course, it also helped that we were all seated around the same conference table, which made communication simple. Now that the Survival Pack is in the wild, it was interesting to go online to see how gamers are taking to the new content. Pure multiplayer mayhem in Versus Mode. Judging from some online play this morning, there's going to be a learning curve as people figure out some of this stuff. For instance, on Lighthouse, the only real "new" map in the Survival Pack, gamers were busy trying to figure out the best place to try and hole up against the zombie horde. The answer is really nowhere, as that's probably the toughest of all the maps in the game, due to the fact that the zombies can tear down many walls to gain access to pretty much every room.
This data is based on: http://www.ign.com/articles/2009/04/21/left-4-dead-survival-pack-in-the-wild
